Ranking your web page on Google requires careful attention to Search Engine Optimization (SEO). If you’re not ranking as high as you expect, it’s possible you’re making one of these 5 onsite SEO mistakes.
1. Keyword Stuffing
Conducting keyword research is essential to onsite SEO. However, you can have too much of a good thing. Overusing your target keyword in your copy looks like spam and will hurt your ranking in Google’s PageRank algorithm.
Cloaking means sending the search engine bots that crawl your website to different content than users’ web browsers. Although this was a popular blackhat SEO trick in the past, Google has caught on, and cloaking will hurt your website’s rankings.
3. Copy and Pasting Content
Although you should link to high-quality resources for your audience, taking text directly from another website is viewed as spam. Furthermore, if your webpage is exactly the same as another webpage that Google has already indexed, there is little use for Google to index your site as well.
4. Hidden Content/Invisible Assets
Google has long since adjusted their algorithm to flag websites that use Blackhat techniques like placing keywords in white text on a white background. Whether you’re trying to hide assets visually on your site or within your site’s code, these techniques will harm your organic PageRank.
5. Bad Linking
Bad linking refers to both outbound and backlinking techniques. Firstly, in terms of outbound linking, you should be selective in the resources you choose to link to. Linking to untrustworthy sites or to sites that contain mature or illegal content is a red flag for Google. As for backlinking, be sure to earn your backlinks! Techniques like backlinking from spammy directories, buying links, and doing 2-way link exchanges (between you and one other site), can have negative effects on your page’s PageRank.
